Athens to Rhodes, Greece, the ferry ride – 08/13 – 08/14

(TJ) After an exhaustive search to find an island that would have us during the high season we ended up taking a long ferry ride to Rhodes. Notes on taking a ferry in Greece, take a cab to the ferry from the metro instead of walking five miles in 100 degree heat, bring a inflatable mattress if you are booked in steerage, bring sleeping bag as you will freeze at night in the subzero cabin temperatures, bring booze and lots of it.

(Michelle) The reason TJ mentioned bring an inflatable mattress on the ferry is that it is totally a free for all as to where you sleep on there and apparently everyone already knows this. We saw all sorts of sleeping items placed in hallways, stairwells, window sills, wherever. The most impressive being a family of four with a huge air mattress set up in a large stairwell about 6 steps down from the main hallway. Thinking we were smart, we checked our big bags below deck, but we were wishing we had them later when they also decided to turn the air con to about 55. I woke up at one point flat on the floor without a pillow or blanket or anything under TJ’s legs, as he was still attempting to sleep in the chair, to the sound of my teeth chattering. This is definitely a low point in places we have had to sleep on this trip. The picture of TJ is at the fourth place we tried to sleep on this boat and we only got this primo spot after one of the stops where a bunch of people got off.

Ok, I'm sorry, but this looks like some weird nightclub that TJ passed out at and woke up in the morning to find everyone gone....
